For the purposes of this page, we will be concentrating on Carat.
Carat can be expressed in 4 ways:
0.20 grams is a carat, and is the standard unit of weight for diamonds and
most other gems. If everything else is equal, the more a stone weighs, the
more valuable it will be. This is not the same as the dimensions of a diamond,
as a diamond can appear different sizes but be the same weight, according to
the cut. The types of cut include ‘well-cut’, deep or shallow.
All loose diamonds are measured by carat weight. Technically, bigger
sized diamonds usually suffer in quality, such as a loss in brilliance. In
order to cut loose diamonds at the best angles to produce the most fire, much
of the original diamond rough is lost, resulting in a great decrease in the
diamond's carat weight.
The larger the diamond is, the rarer it is, making it dearer. For example, a 1-carat diamond will cost more than twice a 1/2-carat diamond (assuming colour, clarity and cut remain constant). The cut and mounting can make a diamond appear larger (or smaller) than its actual weight.
